PORT EVERGLADES ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

NATURE OF WORK:

This position is responsible for professional, sales, and administrative work assisting in planning, organizing and directing the activities of the Port Everglades' Business Development Division.
Work involves assisting the division director in administering programs to achieve cargo growth in containers, breakbulk, neo-bulk and bulk cargoes, as well as programs to attract and retain cruise line business.   This position is responsible for overseeing the development of complex trade analyses and for reviewing and understanding key competitor business strategies in support of Port Everglades lease negotiations and business development and marketing activities. 
This position works closely with the Port Everglades Corporate and Community Relations Manager to assess and recommend promotional opportunities to the division director and is expected to serve on regional and/or national committees and working groups in support of Port Everglades’ business development mission as necessary.  This position also provides customer service and operational support as needed to Port Everglades cargo and cruise customers.
Work is performed with considerable independent judgment, but in close collaboration with the director and other team members, both within and outside the Business Development Division.  The position supervises up to six staff, including two direct reports.   

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS:

•  Assists in directing the operation of the Business Development Division, including Trade Development, Cruise Marketing, and Corporate and Community Relations.
• Assists in developing and implementing marketing programs to increase cargo vessel trade and cruise vessel calls.
• Participates in planning and conducting sales calls for cargo and cruise, including coverage of all major cruise and cargo shipping lines, importers, exporters, custom house brokers, freight forwarders, cruise and travel associations and related industries in South Florida and other areas of the country and world as needed.
• Acts on behalf of the Division Director in his/her absence.
• Supports contract negotiations through fact finding, contract comparisons, and up-to-date analysis of internal and external trade data as well as rates available in competing seaports.
• Provides business points and supporting schedules for all cargo and cruise terminal agreement agenda items requiring Commission approval.
• Coordinates development of Business Development Division revenue and expense budgets for division director approval.
• Receives concerns and/or requests from cargo lines, cruise lines, stevedoring firms, terminal operators, and representatives of other port users and clients; evaluates issues; interfaces with Port operational staff to resolve problems. Liaises with Marketing/Sales Directors of cruise and cargo shipping lines, railroads, trucking firms and others serving Port Everglades as well as owners and/or operators of breakbulk and container services and beneficial cargo owners using these services.
• Assists in the development of effective sales, marketing and advertising campaigns.
• Plans and conducts presentations, receptions and Port tours for current and potential users.
• Represents the Port at various conferences and joint Port functions; serves on professional committees and working groups as appropriate to further Port Everglades’ business development mission.
• Performs other related work as required.

 KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
 
•  Thorough knowledge of current business, marketing and operations principles, practices and procedures of the maritime industry.
• Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of supervision, organization and administration.
• Thorough knowledge of the regulatory requirements applicable to the maritime industry.
• Considerable knowledge of sales and marketing techniques.
• Ability to analyze marketing and trade statistical data and to exercise sound judgment and develop reliable conclusions and forecasts in support of business development, lease negotiation and budget development.
• Ability to plan, implement and coordinate marketing strategies and programs.
• Ability to plan, direct and supervise the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to high performance and team morale.
• Ability to communicate ideas effectively, both orally and in writing to large and small audiences.
• Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in business or public administration, marketing, transportation or a related field; six (6) years progressively responsible experience in the maritime and/or international trade and logistics industries, including four (4) years of high level supervisory and administrative experience; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
