PORT EVERGLADES DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

NATURE OF WORK

This is highly responsible professional and administrative work in planning, organizing and directing the activities of the Port Everglades' Business Development Division.

Work involves responsibility for administering programs to achieve cargo growth in containers, breakbulk, neo-bulk and bulk cargoes, as well as programs to attract and retain cruise line business.  Position incumbent uses independent judgment in developing business strategies to attract new shipping line services and a high level of inter-modal railroad and trucking services, as well as developing an overall corporate and community relations communications and advertising strategy. Work is reviewed periodically through conferences, written reports and attainment of goals and objectives.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Directs the operation of the Business Development Division, including trade development, cruise marketing, and corporate and community relations.

Develops and implements programs to increase all cargo vessel trade; negotiates service agreements and rates with inland transportation companies on behalf of Port Everglades interests.

Plans sales activity in cargo area, including coverage of all major importers, exporters, custom house brokers, freight forwarders and related industry in South Florida and other areas of the country as needed.

Makes budgetary recommendations and prepares the division budget.

Receives concerns and/or requests from cargo lines, cruise lines, stevedoring firms, terminal operators, and representatives of other port users and clients; evaluates issues; interfaces with Port operational staff to resolve problems.

Entices owners and/or operators of liner services and cruise lines to take advantage of doing business in Port Everglades by providing up-to-date marketing and trade statistical analysis.

Maintains liaison with Marketing/Sales Directors of shipping lines, railroads, trucking firms serving Port Everglades and owners and/or operators of all breakbulk and container services.

Travels extensively, both nationally and internationally, to conduct business development meetings with shipping lines, third party logistics providers (3PL), and major beneficial cargo owners (BCO’s).

Assists in the development of effective sales, marketing and advertising campaigns.

Plans and conducts presentations, receptions and Port tours to current and potential users.

Represents the Port at various conferences and joint Port functions.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Thorough knowledge of the current principles, practices and procedures of the maritime industry and marketing.

Thorough knowledge of the regulatory requirements applicable to the industry.

Thorough knowledge of multi-modal transportation pricing and tariffs.

Thorough knowledge of supply chain management.

Thorough knowledge of sales and marketing techniques.

Awareness of Florida public document laws and policies, and of the Florida Sunshine Law.

Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of organization, management, and administration.

Ability to analyze marketing and trade statistical data.

Ability to plan, implement and coordinate marketing strategies and programs.

Ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing, to both domestic and international audiences.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County’s Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in business or public administration, marketing, transportation or related field; six (6) years progressively responsible experience in the maritime industry including four (4) years high-level supervisory and administrative experience; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
