HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTIONS COORDINATOR

NATURE OF WORK
 
This is responsible administrative and supervisory work coordinating the activities of household hazardous waste and other specialized waste collection programs.
 
Work involves planning, implementing and supervising ongoing specialized waste collection program activities. Employees in this class exercise considerable independent judgment in ensuring that program goals and objectives are met.   Supervision is exercised over technical and administrative staff.   Work is reviewed by a section program manager through conferences, reports and observation of program results.
 
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
 
Administers and supervises collection programs for household hazardous waste and other specialized waste at County and municipal facilities including trash transfer stations and special collection events.
 
Supervises technical and administrative staff including developing and authorizing work schedules, monitoring program activities, and providing guidance and direction.
 
Coordinates collection programs with other governmental and private sector agencies.
 
Monitor system operations to ensure compliance to standard
operating procedures, safety procedures, and regulatory guidelines.
 
Provide guidance on regulatory and waste disposal issues for the general public, business operators, municipal representatives, and Broward County agencies.
 
Schedules and monitors on site contract staff and resources.
 
Performs related work as required.
 
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
 
Considerable knowledge of the rules, regulations, policies and procedures related to solid waste collection, recycling, household hazardous waste, and related solid waste services.
 
Considerable knowledge of regulatory requirements and safety protocols used in the collection, handling, transportation and disposal of hazardous wastes.
 
Ability to effectively supervise technical and administrative staff.
 
Ability to identify and classify chemicals and process and package them in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
 
Ability to perform strenuous work while wearing personal protective equipment such a respirator.
 
Ability to operate equipment such as a forklift, straight truck, and trailered equipment.
 
Ability to operate a personal computer and related business software applications.
 
Ability to prepare routine reports, correspondence, and operating plans.
 
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
 
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, political affiliation, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or gender identity and expression.
 
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
 
Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in business or public administration, environmental management, or a related field; four (4) years experience in solid waste or environmental programs including experience with hazardous waste and two (2) years supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
