This is manual and semiskilled gardening and groundskeeping work as well as acting as lead worker for a grounds maintenance crew at Port Everglades. Work involves the development and care of grounds, shrubbery and plants, and the performance of irrigation maintenance and repairs. Employee in this class is required to participate in the work, and supervises the activities of subordinates engaged in mowing grass, planting and transplanting shrubs, fertilizing, and trimming and cutting trees at Port facilities. Employee coordinates the work schedules of a groundskeeping crew. Work is performed with some independence of action within established routines. Work is reviewed through inspections of areas maintained.
Assists in planning and scheduling grounds maintenance, planting, and grass cutting; mows grass; plants and transplants shrubs; fertilizes lawn and plants; trims bushes and trees.
Sprays lawns and shrubs to control insects, diseases, and pests.
Uses standard gardening tools in maintenance work; performs irrigation system maintenance and repairs; waters plants manually, as required.
Operates power mowers, trimmers, sprayers, chain saws, and other tools; maintains equipment in good working condition.
Coordinates and monitors work schedules to ensure work completion and makes any necessary schedule changes.
Coordinates vacation schedules and plans for additional staffing needs as required; coordinates the ordering of grounds maintenance supplies as well as equipment requirements.
Performs regular inspections of assigned areas and completes a report of conditions to superior.
Rakes and removes grass cuttings and leaves; sweeps adjacent streets and walkways; loads and unloads soil, sand, sod, rock, gravel and other ground covering materials, as required.
Trains and supervises subordinate workers assigned to perform gardening and groundskeeping.
Works on a ladder or lift to trim or cut trees and other plants, when necessary.
Maintains time records and daily activity log; prepares labor and material estimates; prepares requisitions and work reports.
Performs related work as required.
Knowledge of the principles, practices and treatment of soils, flowers, grasses, and plants.
Knowledge of effective remedial measures to control diseases, insects and pests that attack plants and grass.
Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Knowledge of the materials and tools needed to perform irrigation system maintenance and repairs.
Knowledge of types of fertilizer and chemicals used in soils, and methods used in preparing them for use.
Ability to effectively supervise a grounds maintenance crew to maintain grass, flowers, shrubs and trees.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in all weather conditions.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, political affiliation, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or gender identity and expression.
Skill in use of tools, materials and equipment common to lawn and shrub maintenance.
Graduation from high school or equivalent recognized certification including or supplemented by education and training in plant and lawn care and maintenance; four (4) years experience in grounds maintenance work; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License at time of appointment. Certification in the application of restricted-use pesticides and herbicides by the State of Florida preferred.
