NATURE OF WORK
This is skilled work of the journey level in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel driven automotive and related equipment.
Work involves performing skilled tasks in mechanical repair and maintenance of automobiles, heavy duty trucks, tractors and other standard and special automotive equipment in accordance with standard trade practices. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate employees. Work is subject to review in progress and upon completion.
Performs skilled automotive work in mechanical repair and maintenance of automobiles, light and heavy duty trucks, tractors, buses, backhoes, graders, rollers, wreckers and boom trucks, small and large portable generators, road sweepers, and lawn care equipment including power driven mowers, edgers and trimmers, in accordance with standard trade practices.
Repairs and maintains carburetors, alternators, generators, distributors, starters, air compressors, and pumps; may complete auto body work.
Inspects, adjusts or replaces necessary units and related parts including valves, pistons, main bearings, shock absorbers, air conditioning units and fuel and exhaust systems.
Repairs and overhauls transmissions, differentials, front and rear end assemblies; repairs and installs hydraulic controls and related equipment.
Tests motor timing, cylinder compression, fuel consumption and steering using testing equipment.
Inspects automotive and mechanical electrical equipment for failures; uses hand and power driven tools and garage equipment such as engine analyzers, brake lathes, freon recovery units, and hydraulic lifts.
Adjusts, repairs and overhauls brakes, including discs, pads, and master cylinders; adjusts ignition system, cleans and replaces spark plugs; refaces valves and seats.
Installs rings, bearings, and cylinder heads; makes necessary repairs to cooling system; and maintains all fluid levels.
Analyses and locates defects in operation and road tests equipment before returning to service.
Maintains current shop manuals to ascertain type and specifications of parts needed; maintains inventory and records, requisitions parts and supplies and prepares inventory reports.
Keeps tools and equipment in clean operating condition.
Repairs and maintains alternative fuel systems, including propane.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and procedures in the automotive mechanic trade.
Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines and of repair and maintenance characteristics of a wide variety of motorized equipment.
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Ability to plan, schedule, inspect and coordinate the work of skilled mechanics, mechanic apprentices and semi-skilled personnel.
Ability to diagnose defects and failure of gasoline, diesel engines and various related construction equipment.
Ability to keep shop records such as inventory, service records, etc.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, political affiliation, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or gender identity and expression.
Skill in the use and care of various shop tools, machinery and equipment involved in maintenance, overhaul and repair of automotive equipment.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school or equivalent recognized certification; four (4) years experience in automotive mechanic work with specific knowledge in the areas of tune ups, ignition systems and automotive air conditioning; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession of a valid Florida driver's license required at time of appointment and ASE Certification (automotive or truck).
