PORT EVERGLADES SIGN PAINTER

NATURE OF WORK
 
This is skilled painting work in the lettering of signs for a wide variety of purposes.    Incumbent completes various painting and lettering tasks by using freehand lettering, stencils, silk screens, and other painting devices and processes.  
 
Work involves identifying signs and directional lettering for buildings and offices, vehicular identification, and traffic control signs.    Work includes the preparation of materials for creating signs and the placement of signs.   Work requires individual skilled performance in accordance with standard trade practices. Employee receives assignments orally and through written job orders.   Work is reviewed while in process and upon completion.
 
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
 
Hand letters a variety of signs for traffic control such as caution signs, stop signs, and other signs; cuts and applies reflective adhesive for signs which must be visible at night without interior illumination.
 
Lays out and cuts film used for silk screen processing of various signs; cuts mitre boards to build silk screens frame and signs; lays out and cuts stencils.
 
Lays out and hand letters all types and sizes of signs identifying facilities and installations throughout the port; also stripes, letters and completes related painting work.
 
Prepares a variety of identifying signs for buildings; letters office doors and boards for affixing to offices; works with all colors and gold leaf; letters and stripes automotive equipment; uses striping brush and masking tape.
 
Assists with commercial art work and makes special signs and posters; mixes, matches, and blends paints, enamels, and other materials used in sign painting.
 
Coordinates work groups for major painting projects and performs duties of crew leader when required or assigned.
 
Cleans brushes and spray guns and makes minor repairs to equipment and apparatus.
 
Performs related work as required.
 
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
 
Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and practices of the sign painting trade.
 
Considerable knowledge of the proper methods of preparing surfaces for painting.
 
Knowledge of the basic techniques of all standard methods of sign painting such as silk screen, air brush, spray gun, etc.
 
Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of sign painting work.
 
Ability to interpret and work from sketches, pencil layouts, and specifications; ability to learn to design, build, and use silk process screens.  
 
Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor.
 
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
 
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of BrowardCounty's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
 
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, political affiliation, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or gender identity and expression.
 
Skill in painting and lettering with all types of brushes and lettering pens.
 
Skill in mixing paints and matching and blending colors.
 
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
 
Graduation from high school or equivalent recognized certification; two (2) years experience in sign painting, including six (6) months experience in freehand work, or completion of an approved program in sign painting; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
 
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
 
Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License at time of appointment.
