SAFETY AND OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH COORDINATOR

NATURE OF WORK

This is professional level administrative and field work, coordinating occupational health and safety programs for the county's Risk Management Division.

Work involves supervising activities of the safety and occupational health field staff and assisting senior management with program and policy development. Incumbent is responsible for developing and coordinating countywide occupational health and safety compliance programs, projects and studies, and assisting the Divisions with their implementation. Employees in this class provide supervision, training and direction to subordinate staff. Work is performed with considerable independence and initiative under the direction of professional and administrative superior. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports and program achievements.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Serves as professional/technical resource for activities/operations involving occupational health and safety components.

Audits county facilities and notes conditions that may be hazardous to the health or safety of county employees and/or the public; confers with Division management to obtain their cooperation in eliminating or reducing unsafe conditions or practices.

Verifies status of recommended corrective actions.

Supervises the implementations of countywide occupational health and safety programs.

Provides occupational safety and health information and resource management support to other Divisions, interest groups, consultants, contractors and the public as necessary.

Acts as primary liaison to third party occupational medical provider for quality assurance and problem solving. Oversees the medical surveillance program.

Assists in the research and preparation of annual work programs and budgets.

Prepares and delivers relevant presentations to enhance management and/or safety meetings.

Facilitates or participates in Divisional meetings related to occupational safety and health.

Tracks and analyzes occupational and environmental health performance of Divisions using appropriate database applications; identifies trends and opportunities for improvement and develops plans for execution.

Keeps abreast of current legislation, information, technology developments and industry best practices.

Evaluates and recommends appropriate practices and equipment related to occupational safety and health protection.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of occupational and environmental health principles and practices across a wide variety of settings.

Considerable knowledge of sources of information, current literature and recent developments regarding occupational health and safety.

Considerable knowledge of occupational safety and health regulations, standards and codes.

Ability to initiate and develop practical, technically sound, operationally robust occupational and environmental health programs that meet or exceed the pertinent regulatory and/or consensus standards.

Ability to analyze policy and technical issues and to render advise supported by good judgment and, when possible, data.

Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and executive briefs supported by appropriate data in the form of charts, tables and/or graphics.

Ability to analyze trends using appropriate software and to provide statistical analyses as necessary to effect good planning.

Ability to research occupational safety and health issues using appropriate computer tools.

Ability to interview county employees and the public in a way that elicits their cooperation in resolving and/or preventing health issues.

Ability to keep confidential personal and business information obtained during the course of work, except when required by law or overriding health and safety considerations.

Ability to plan, coordinate and supervise the activities of subordinate staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high moral.

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, political affiliation, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or gender identity and expression.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major coursework in science, engineering or related field; sufficient higher education (master's degree and/or continuing education) to ensure proficiency and currency in occupational safety and health topics; a minimum of six (6) years experience in occupational safety and health programming, including three (3) years of supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Certification or licensure (e.g. CSP; CIH; P.E., etc.) a plus.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Must have valid Florida driver's license.
