COMMUNITY RELATIONS COORDINATOR

NATURE OF WORK

This is administrative and professional community liaison work in planning, developing and implementing projects and programs designed to promote understanding and cooperation among the racially and culturally diverse groups within Broward County, to alleviate inequalities, prejudices, intolerance and other sources of intergroup tensions and to increase multi-ethnic community awareness of County services.

Work involves developing plans to enhance multi-ethnic access to information on services offered by the County, developing and implementing community relations training workshops, developing multi-ethnic videos and public service announcements. Work also involves acting as a liaison to the County's multi-ethnic community for purposes of disseminating information. Employees in this class are expected to coordinate and manage assigned projects and programs with considerable independence, although all major decisions are referred to an administrative superior for advice and direction. Supervision is received through conferences with an administrative superior and by adherence to established policies and procedures.

Work is reviewed through conferences, reports, programs and project achievements.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Provides professional level staff assistance to an administrative superior in developing and coordinating community relations programs and projects.

Develops, coordinates and implements a county-wide community relations program.

Develops and implements community relations training modules, seminars, workshops and conferences to educate citizens regarding various ethnic and religious groups.

Develops and distributes brochures pamphlets, flyers and public service announcements to the community to increase awareness of County programs and services; writes and updates the Community Relations Directory.

Develops marketing plans and coordinates public relations and promotional programs/projects.

Conducts special studies in police/community relations and advises administrative superiors of activities that impact the County.

Promotes and participates in activities recognizing the cultural heritage of BrowardCounty citizens.

Develops program procedures and schedules; prepares project reports and related data.

Recruits, trains and coordinates volunteers to disseminate information to BrowardCounty citizens.

Serves as a liaison with multi-ethnic groups in the County.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of community relations program planning and administration.

Considerable knowledge of ethnic, cultural and religious programs and county-wide activities.

Considerable knowledge of research techniques and sources of available published information useful in the development of training programs, workshops and seminars.

Knowledge of the principles of supervision, management, organization and administration.

Knowledge of the principles and practices of marketing, communications, and public relations.

Ability to plan, develop and implement community relations training modules and programs.

Ability to conduct research and special studies, prepare and maintain reports and disseminate information.

Ability to develop community interest and participation in activities through an active community relations program.

Ability to recruit, train and supervise community relations volunteers.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to plan, coordinate and facilitate strategic advertising in local media outlets, to include newspapers, radio and/or television

Ability to plan, coordinate and implement special projects and/or events.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of BrowardCounty's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, marital status or political affiliation.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in behavioral or social sciences, public or business administration, or related field; four (4) years experience in planning, coordinating and implementing community relations programs, including two (2) years experience in training diverse populations; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
