WATER LOSS TECHNICIAN

NATURE OF WORK

This is sub-professional technical and administrative work in a Water Loss Leak Detection Program.

Work involves water line location, leak detection, data base maintenance, and interface with other water loss programs. Employees in this class may supervise the work and activities of technical subordinates. Work requires the exercise of independent judgement in planning and carrying out assignments. Work is performed with indepenence within established policies, procedures and technical guidelines and is reviewed by administrative superiors through conferences and reports.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Conducts and supervises water line location and leak detection activities using tools and electronic instruments.

Calibrates and performs general maintenance on instruments.

May plan, assign and supervise work of subordinate technical personnel.

Maintains and interprets data using a computerized database.

Interfaces with other personnel involved in water loss or revenue recovery programs; coordinates activities and exchanges information as needed.

Prepares reports and makes recommendations for superiors.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods and practices used in water loss detection and remedies.

Knowledge of safety protocols, procedures, and operations relative to accomplishment of objectives.

Knowledge of water distribution system.

Ability to accumulate data and prepare reports.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to make independent investigations into water loss and leak detection, report findings and make a recommendation.

Ability to perform calibration and light maintenance on water leak detection equipment.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, sex, age, disability or political affiliation.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school supplemented by college level course work in the field of utilities, land surveying, electronics, or related field; experience in the field of water or wastewater utilities or land surveying; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License.
