The purpose of this class within the organization is to deploy and maintain an Ethernet based communications network using switches and routers, fiber optic cable, copper cable and wireless.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.
Monitors the state of the communications network, any deviation from normal operation requires fast determination and prompt action is required; documents the communications network; as new communications infrastructure are added to the network, all information about the infrastructure is recorded, including network addressing, equipment information, inventorying of equipment deployed and spares.
Troubleshoots communications network, monitoring of the communications infrastructure and issues reported by the operations department; investigates and resolves network troubles.
Configures and programs network monitoring software; programs and tests equipment prior to deployment in the field; places equipment in the lab and ensures that it will function in the field.
Documents network hardware, software, configurations, locations, performance and usage; resolves network trouble, as caused by hardware, software, operators, procedures, vendors, contractors or the general public; programs, configures and tests network hardware prior to deployment.
Procures telecommunication goods and services; provides oversight of all voice and video systems.
Verifies integrity and repair of the communications infrastructure; tests optical fibers, splices and terminations; turns up network communications infrastructure; performs testing between the traffic intersection and the communications hub site to ensure all elements of the network work together.
Inspects and verifies operation of work performed by contractors, vendors or other employees; manages IT professionals that are responsible for the voice and video systems for Broward County; provides project management of large scale communications projects; manages vendor relations for voice and video contracts.
Performs related work as assigned.
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
Involves routine and frequent exposure to electrical shocks; heights.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one (1) year of college in electronics, data communications, and computer science or closely related field.
Requires three (3) years experience installing, troubleshooting, and repairing of network devices in a large IP network or communication network infrastructure.

Emergency Management Responsibilities
