CRISIS INTERVENTION SPECIALIST

NATURE OF WORK

This is specialized professional case work. Work involves providing timely and immediate accessible "hands-on" emergency intervention at a crisis site designed to de-escalate and resolve the level of risk. Employees in this class provide rapid, accurate and effective assessment, intervention services as necessary, linkage to community resources where appropriate, and supportive backup to community agencies, police departments, Adult Protective Services, and families. Work is performed with considerable independent judgement within approved policies and procedures. Supervision is provided through conferences, reports, and review of results of divisional programs.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Provides timely and immediate accessible "hands-on" emergency intervention at a crisis site.

Evaluates and determines appropriate intervention/s based on assessment of need. Implements necessary intervention to stabilize consumer.

Develops consumer history by gathering pertinent information to resolve the crisis situation.

Prepares individualized care plans for continuity of care.

Counsels consumers and/or families to work through problems precipitating crisis situations.

Contacts appropriate community resources and links with essential services that will alleviate crisis situation and provide continuity of care.

Meets with staff of local community agencies/organizations to ensure that problems and needs of consumer are articulated.

Completes progress notes to document interventions provided and additional future service needs of the consumer.

Participates in consumer staffing, supervision, training and inservice sessions.

Works closely with protective investigators from Department of Children and Families Adult Protective Services and with human services counselors to stabilize consumer.

Provides intensive case management.

Prepares for and participates in guardianship hearings before a General Master when required.

Interfaces with the Office of Public Guardianship as well as with private guardians.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of case management principles, techniques and practices and their application to specific casework and community problems.

Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of counseling and crisis intervention.

Considerable knowledge of cognitive, emotional, physical, nutritional, and environmental issues and solutions.

Considerable knowledge of available governmental, community and private programs and resources.

Ability to make rapid and accurate decisions.

Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Ability to keep detailed, accurate records and documentation.

Ability to perform all tasks in a professional and timely manner.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, sexual orientation, or political affiliation.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Master's degree in psychology, social work, human services, mental health counseling or closely related field; two years of experience in crisis intervention which must have included six months of experience in clinical case management; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
