PORT EVERGLADES END USER SUPPORT SPECIALIST

NATURE OF WORK

This is highly skilled technical and analytical work with some administrative responsibility implementing, developing and supporting automation systems, software, and equipment and other office systems for Port-wide automation projects in an end-user service oriented environment.

Work involves providing technical support to users of automation systems which operate in a microcomputer, minicomputer and/or LAN/WAN environment. Work also involves assisting in the training of employees in new office systems and equipment. Under the supervision of an administrative or professional superior, work also involves assisting and planning, analyzing and organizing studies of various office operations and procedures, planning and recommending solutions and enhancements. Work is performed with considerable independent judgment including responsibility for assigned projects, including planning, organization, development, coordination, implementation and reporting. Work is reviewed through frequent consultative, meetings and written reports.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Plans, organizes and conducts studies of organizational operations; identifies areas for the application of automated technologies.

Analyzes work flow processes and develops recommendations for improvements and solutions using automated systems.

Configures systems equipment to user needs and maintains installation through stages of implementation.

Meets with user personnel for applications analysis, demonstrations and training.

Researches, tests and installs new and upgraded systems and applications software and hardware.

Responds within established policies and procedures to calls or inquiries from user personnel to resolve current hardware, software, peripheral equipment, or network problems.

Maintains records, reports and documentation on systems and software specifications and configuration.

Installs, configures, designs and maintains network and communications hardware and software; troubleshoots and resolves hardware, software and network problems.

Prepares requirements analysis and documentation in order to procure upgrades or additional equipment.

Evaluates new systems hardware and software.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of operating system component and language relevant to area of assignment.

Knowledge of the current principles and practices of computer systems technology.

Knowledge of existing hardware, software and network systems.

Knowledge of the current research and trends of new computer-related technologies.

Ability to plan and conduct studies on work procedures to identify potential areas of automated system application.

Ability to plan, organize and conduct informal training for user agency personnel.

Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex hardware, software and network related problems.

Ability to analyze technical material and documentation.

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. without assistance, to unbox, install, or move computer equipment, such as printers, UPSs, and PCs; bend and stoop/crawl under furniture to install or trace cabling and connections for equipment; climb ladders to access communications closets and roof tops; walk long distances and stand for long periods of time when accompanying and assisting vendors or troubleshooting issues at remote sites, such as cruise terminals.

Ability to work with a minimal level of supervision.

Ability to express ideas effectively both orally and in writing.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from an accredited two (2) year college with major course work in computer science or related field; four (4) years experience in supporting users and troubleshooting computer systems and equipment specific to area of assignment; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
