This is technical work in the operation of electronic data processing equipment in a large centralized data processing operation.

Employees in this class assist in the maintenance of production schedules of computer units through the operation of a computer console and related equipment. Work stations may include the master console, printing equipment and the tape library, and employees are responsible for participating in the development of procedures and the maintenance of operational technical controls. Work involved responsibility for operating a variety of unit record equipment. Employees may provide guidance and direction to subordinate clerical or technical personnel engaged in performing various tasks in support of computer operations. Supervision is received from a technical superior who reviews work in progress and upon completion and assists with difficult or unusual problems.


Operates a variety of electronic data processing equipment including computer consoles, printers, tape drive and card read-punch, unit records and microfiche equipment.

Schedules a continuous flow of data to tabulation and computer equipment; maintains a record of operations.

Performs routine unit records work in the operation of collators, detachers and folding equipment.

Monitors computer consoles and takes appropriate proactive actions to resolve potential problems.

Assists technical superior in planning and gathering data for computer analysis; analyzes less complex data storage, selection, and computation problems.

Performs cleaning and minor maintenance and performs adjustments on computer equipment; changes tape reels and printing ribbons, inserts and aligns paper supplies, cleans magnetic reading heads, and hand punches carriage tapes.

Schedules and sends computer tapes to and from the tape library selects and replaces computer tapes according to numerical indices; operates tape cleaning machines to clean and

strip magnetic tapes in order to maintain a computer tape library.

Performs related work as required.

Some knowledge of the operating procedures used in the area of assignment.

Some knowledge of job control language utilized in modern data processing systems.

Some knowledge of the application of computers to the processing of business, accounting and statistical information.

Ability to operate data processing and peripheral equipment.

Ability to assemble and implement work flow procedures used in electronic data processing.

Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.

Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.

Ability to select and replace computer tapes according to numerical index.

Ability to operate a tape cleaning machine.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.


Graduation from high school supplemented by college level course work in data processing, computer science or related field; six (6) months experience in the operation of electronic data processing equipment; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
