NATURE OF WORK
This is advanced technical work in the operation of computer equipment in a large centralized computer operation.
Employees in this class are responsible for operating a complex computer console which controls and monitors electronic data processing equipment that automatically processes a large volume of business, accounting and statistical information.
Duties include preparing the computer for program processing and operation. Employees are responsible for the manipulation of controls and observance of visual indicators in accordance with standard procedures and for rearranging the sequence of program steps for correcting of errors, or to continue operations when individual units of the system malfunction.
Work is performed with considerable independence on routine operations, and employees may provide guidance and direction to subordinate clerical or operational personnel engaged in performing various tasks in support of computer operations.
Supervision is received from a technical supervisor who reviews work in progress and upon completion for accuracy in processing and for conformance with established instructions.
This classification is distinguished from the position of Computer Operator I by the performance of more advanced and complex technical work and by the responsibility for independent decisions based on experience and knowledge of operations.
Supports a complex computer console which controls and monitors electronic computer equipment on mainframe and mid-range computer platforms including associated peripheral equipment.
Prepare the computers for program processing and operation.
Responsible for the manipulation of controls and observance of visual indicators in accordance with standard procedures for re-arranging the sequence of program steps for correcting errors, or to continue operations when individual units of the system malfunction.
Responsible for the operation and maintenance of peripheral devices such as laser and impact printers’ platforms, magnetic tapes and cartridge drives, mounting and handling tapes.
Maintains detailed information for various computer platforms, which could include online console logs and hardcopy maintenance logs. Also includes periodic inventory of various supplies associated with computer platforms.
Assists supervisor in various phases of operations and serves as shift supervisor in superior's absence.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of the operating characteristics of current electronic information technology equipment.
Knowledge of off-line devices and auxiliary peripheral input-output equipment such as printers and tape drives.
Knowledge of the current principles of electronic information technology and of computer system operation and capabilities.
Knowledge of general office practices and procedures.
Knowledge of applicable Job Control Language.
Ability to operate electronic information technology equipment.
Ability to work under rigid production schedules and deadlines.
Ability to lift in excess of 25 pounds.
Ability to detect equipment and program malfunctions.
Ability to think logically, to comprehend complex system requirements and the principles of programming, and to apply these principles in operation of a computer system.
Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.
Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school supplemented by course work in information technology, computer science or related field; two (2) years experience in computer operations, or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
