Under general supervision, performs a variety of technical and/or supervisory library work.


Interacts with patrons in order to assist them in using library services/equipment, programs, and facilities, collect/cancel fines or fees as appropriate, answer questions, identify their service needs or locate materials.

Oversees the work of subordinate employees and/or other workers in order to ensure that work assignments are completed correctly, safely, and in a timely manner.

Monitors patron behavior in order to ensure a safe environment for library usage.

Processes requests for library materials/information received by phone, fax, email, or in person in order to provide patrons with requested materials/information.

Trains staff in the use of a variety of databases, activities, policies/ procedures, and office equipment in order to ensure that employees complete assignments correctly and use the equipment properly.

Checks a variety of library materials in and out, or renews them in order to track location and usage of library materials.

Resolves day-to-day operating problems/issues in order to maximize the efficiency/effectiveness of office operation and/or service provided.

Staffs the reference desk or other service points of contact in order to assist patrons in obtaining needed information/completing research and back up other staff.

Evaluates employee performance in order to identify training needs, determine performance strengths and weaknesses, set goals, and to ensure the job is being done correctly.

Coordinates volunteer/community service worker activities in order to supplement staff workload, introduce volunteers to library functions/work environment, and recruit new staff.

Follows-up a variety of special assignments, projects, and related matters in order to ensure assignments and projects are completed in a timely manner and/or by established deadline.

Tracks library usage and circulation in order to determine staffing needs, numbers, types and categories of library materials, etc. needed.

Processes requests for library materials/information received by phone, fax, email, or in person in order to provide patrons with requested materials/information.

Schedules staff for work in order to ensure efficient, effective office operations and/or provide essential coverage.

Prepares a variety of correspondence, notifications, forms, and related documents in order to communicate information to staff and/or the public.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS – REQUIRED AT TIME OF HIRE (Applicants are expected possess the required Knowledge, Abilities, and/or Skills listed below prior to being hired for positions in this job title.)

Knowledge of procedures for operating various office equipment, including personal computers.

Ability to operate a personal computer.

Ability to multi-task.

Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and/or division.

Ability to bend, stoop, twist, and reach to shelve a variety of library materials.

Ability to sort/file materials alphabetically, chronologically, and numerically.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County’s Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, political affiliation, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or gender identity and expression.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS – NOT REQUIRED AT TIME OF HIRE BUT EXPECTED TO BE DEVELOPED ON THE JOB (The Knowledge, Abilities, and/or Skills listed below, although considered to be necessary in order to perform the work of this job title, are not required at time of hire.)

Knowledge of general library operating policies and procedures.

Knowledge of established customer service policies, procedures, and techniques.

Knowledge of general policies, procedures, and techniques for interacting with disruptive individuals.

Knowledge of general supervisory principles and practices.

Knowledge of types and locations of various materials and services within the assigned library facility.

Knowledge of employee training procedures and techniques.

Knowledge of Broward County library circulation procedures.

Knowledge of emergency response/emergency preparedness policies and procedures.

Knowledge of basic reference resources, including hard copy and Internet.

Knowledge of policies and procedures for new patron registration/issuing library cards.

Knowledge of safety procedures for lifting and carrying.

Ability to understand, follow, and explain a variety of library policies and procedures.

Ability to learn/perform a variety of work activities with the assigned Department/Division.

Ability to explain/demonstrate procedures for performing a variety of work activities.

Ability to understand, follow, and explain a variety of library policies and procedures.

Ability to operate a personal computer to prepare a variety of correspondence, notices, schedules, and related materials using a variety of office and library related software/applications.


Two (2) years full time para-professional library work, or closely related work experience.
