VAN DRIVER

NATURE OF WORK

 

This is routine work operating a motor vehicle to transport clients, participating in a program/s offered through the Human Services Department, to various medical and health facilities.

 

Work also involves driving to and from various programs, Divisions, Departments, or other locations to provide program and client support such as picking up and dropping off supplies, equipment, records, medicines and other materials related to the operation or conduct of the program/s.   Also may assist with minor tasks in and around Human Services Depart­ment facilities between transport assignments.   Such tasks may include assisting with issuing supplies, providing back-up at a reception desk, assisting with monitoring clients and citizens visiting or accessing facilities and services, etc.

 

Work is performed within established rules and procedures.   Supervision is received from a superior in the form of specific assignments or schedules and reviewed on a daily basis.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

 

Operates a motor vehicle such as a van or light truck in transporting passengers to and from medical and health facilities.   Assists passengers on boarding and leaving vehicle.   Answers routine questions.   Verifies identity of clients being picked up and/or dropped off by checking transportation logs.

 

Follows an established route or schedule as assigned on a daily basis.   Maintains communication with supervisor, nurses, and/or coordinators via radio and/or cell phone during transport activities.

 

Transports secured medical records, currency, and medications between programs and facilities in accordance with Division policy and procedures.

 

Maintains records and logs on travel time, mileage, fuel purchases and numbers of passengers served, etc.

 

Maintains maintenance and communications records in keeping with established policies to maintain confidentiality of clients and client records and to ensure safe delivery of clients, goods, and services.

 

Takes vehicle to be serviced at a central servicing area for repairs and/or preventative maintenance.

 

Cleans and washes vehicle as necessary.

 

Performs related work as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES & SKILLS

 

Some knowledge of state and county traffic and motor vehicle regulations.

 

Some knowledge of JCAHO and HIPPA regulations and polices related to general healthcare.

 

Some knowledge of the geography of Broward County.

 

Ability to obtain and maintain authorization to drive a county vehicle and/or on County business.

 

Ability to operate the assigned vehicle in the prescribed manner.

 

Ability to detect improperly functioning mechanical systems on the assigned vehicle.

 

Ability to make minor adjustments to and to do minor servicing of automotive equipment.

 

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written and instructions.

 

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, political affiliation, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or gender identity and expression.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

Successful completion of job related tests. One (1) year of commercial driving experience, preferably driving large passenger vehicles, .e.g., 15 or more passengers desired.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

 

A valid Florida Class E License is required.
