This is supervisory and/or skilled work in offset, digital press and related duplication and photolithography services.

An employee in this class spends a high percentage of time completing more complex four color jobs or supervises the work of subordinate printing technicians. Duties include conferring with and advising departmental officials regarding work to be performed in absence of print shop supervisor. The incumbent exercises considerable technical independence in determining proper printing methods and control of work. Work is reviewed and inspected in process and upon completion. Continuing departmental acceptance of service provided and satisfactory completion of production schedules is overseen by the Print Shop Supervisor.


This classification is distinguished from a Printing Technician II by the supervisory responsibilities over a subordinate staff of technical personnel or the completion of a significant number of more complex four color reproduction jobs and the responsibility for independent operating decisions based on experience and knowledge of operations.


Supervises the preparation and operation of digital and offset process machinery in printing a variety of forms, charts, letterheads, envelopes, carbonless paper and other material in both single, two, and four color printing.

Exercise considerable technical independence in determining proper printing methods and control of work.

Operates cameras; develops, masks, strips and rules negatives; makes line and half tone plates and operates the more complex reproduction equipment.

Performs quality assurance checks to proof for color, accuracy, formatting, stock size and quantity.

Supervises the operation of special purpose machinery such as folding, stitching, paper drilling, padding and cutting equipment.

Prepares production reports indicating job type, requesting agencies and costs.

Checks deliveries when they arrive and supervises their unloading in the absence of the supervisor.

Supervises the cleaning, oiling and adjusting of duplicating equipment; makes minor repairs to duplicating equipment.

Handles office duties and maintains and updates computer records. Attends meeting in printing supervisor's absence.

Confers with and advises departmental officials regarding work to be performed.

Performs related work as required.


Considerable knowledge of the operation, limitations and adaptabilities of offset presses, digital presses and auxiliary equipment.

Considerable knowledge of four(4) color printing techniques and quality assurance.

Considerable knowledge of the papers, inks, chemicals and other supplies used in duplicating by means of offset machinery.

Considerable knowledge of machine adjustments required in performing a wide variety of duplicating work utilizing offset and duplicating processes.

Considerable knowledge of photolithography.

Considerable knowledge of computer equipment.

Ability to supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

Ability to plan, schedule, and organize work to meet fluctuations in work load.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.

Skill in using instruments to engrave, mask, and opaque negatives.

Skill in the operation of offset and photolithographic machinery auxiliary equipment.


Graduation from high school; four (4) years experience in the operation of digital and offset presses and related equipment; six (6) months supervisory experience preferred; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
