This is supervisory and administrative work in the operation of a county firearms range.

Work involves planning and directing the functions of the firearms range. An employee in this class exercises considerable independent judgment in formulating objectives and procedures, and in insuring the overall safety of firearms range operations. Work also includes the preparation of budget recommendations, as well as, fiscal responsibility for revenue produced. Supervision is provided by review of program effectiveness, reports, conferences and observation of results obtained.


This classification is distinguished from a Range Master I by the additional experience required.


Plans, schedules and assigns the work of subordinates in the operation of a firearms range.

Supervises the operation and maintenance of firearms range grounds, buildings and equipment; insures compliance with safety rules and regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to the use of firearms.

Prepares recommendations for personnel and equipment budgetary needs; initiates requisitions for equipment and supplies; maintains a variety of records and reports on firearms range operations.

Collects and accounts for funds received from sales of gun range equipment and accessories; conducts monthly inventories of equipment and supplies.

Meets with organized groups, individuals, or other interested parties to provide information, assess community-wide needs, and further public relations for the county.

Maintains liaison with user organizations to coordinate activities at a county firearms range.

Develops and conducts diversified recreational programs and services at the range.

Develops an in-service training program for subordinates.

Provides for the safety of employees and public utilizing the firearms range.

Performs related work as required.


Thorough knowledge of the operational safety and maintenance requirements of typical hand and shoulder firearms, trap, skeet and archery.

Thorough knowledge of the federal, state and local laws and ordinances regulating the use of firearms.

Thorough knowledge of the current trends and developments pertaining to gun range operations.

Thorough knowledge of safety rules and regulations relating to the use of firearms and the operation of a firearms range.

Considerable knowledge of the proper care and use of firearms, trap, skeet and archery.

Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with the public and to be capable of enforcing regulations firmly and impartially.

Ability to plan, direct and supervise the work of subordinates.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.

Ability to plan and conduct in-service training programs for subordinates.

Skill in the use and care of firearms, trap, skeet and archery.


Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in parks and recreation management, leisure services, business or public administration; two (2) years experience managing a public or business facility; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.


Certification or ability to be certified as an instructor by the National Rifle Association and possession of a valid Florida Driver's License at time of appointment.
