This is specialized technical and supervisory work in planning, scheduling, and routing of vehicles in the Transportation Department, Transit Division.

Work involves coordinating activities of subordinates in planning and scheduling vehicle travel times along existing routes in the transit system.   Work also involves planning and designing new routes and schedules to meet operating requirements and changing demands.   Work includes writing transit schedules, breaking down schedules into runs, preparing passenger and terminal schedules and compiling statistics and reports on operations.   Work requires the use of independent judgment and discretion in determining the most efficient and economical bus schedules.   Work also involves the supervision of personnel involved in schedule related work.   Work is reviewed for compliance with transit operating policies and procedures by the Superintendent and/or Transit Manager-Planning and Scheduling, who provides general direction as needed.


This classification is distinguished from Transit Scheduler I by the supervisory responsibilities and greater experience required.


Coordinates the writing of transit schedules and preparation of daily work assignments for bus operators.

Schedules driver work shifts and pay hours, and assists in scheduling picks of work assignments and vacations.

Supervises and participates in the design of bus routes and travel times and the breakdown of schedules into runs by hours and days off.

Assists in developing new routes to meet changing operating and passenger demands, and terminal schedules.

Coordinates the preparation of rough drafts of maps and timetables and the updating of route and schedule information.

Compiles and analyzes statistical data concerning passenger loads, route mileage, time intervals and passenger transfers, on time performance issues.

Oversees coordination and preparation of routing and special reports on operations, routes and schedules, and frequency/headways.

Assists in the preparation of the annual budget.

Performs related work as required.


Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of public transit routing and scheduling.

Thorough  knowledge of the geography of the service area.

Considerable knowledge of primary and secondary roads, traffic hazards and restrictions of traffic throughout the service area.

Ability to analyze complex information and to exercise independent judgment in arriving at conclusions.

Ability to interpret transit work rules and union labor agreements.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.

Ability to oversee, conduct, and lead meetings with staff.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, political affiliation, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or gender identity and expression.

Skill and experience in using computer-based scheduling and spread sheet programs.


Graduation from high school; six (6) years of experience in public transit planning or scheduling operations including at least two (2) years of supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
