TRANSIT MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTOR

NATURE OF WORK

This is specialized technical instructional work in the training of transit mechanics in the Mass Transit Division.

Work involves planning, implementing, conducting, and evaluating bus maintenance training programs. Work also involves planning, developing, researching, and documenting training activities, developing courses that convey complex and diverse material to a work force with varied backgrounds, analyzing current local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to bus maintenance training programs, researching current training needs and priorities, and conducting formal training sessions. Employees in this class are provided latitude for independent judgment and discretion in evaluating student performance and developing training methods while operating under the scope of established divisional rules, regulations, and procedures. Work is reviewed by a superior through oral and written reports and observations of program effectiveness.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Prepares new bus maintenance training courses or revises existing courses; compiles training materials including course outlines, lesson plans, and training aids; researches, edits, and develops training materials for use in on-the-job and classroom training.

Reviews and interprets current regulations from federal, state, and local agencies to develop training programs related to bus maintenance and repair requirements to remain in compliance with existing guidelines.

Consults with management and supervisors to determine current bus maintenance training needs and relative priorities; identifies additional training needs from research and observations of bus maintenance operations.

Participates in service training by conducting formal training sessions or seminars; assists supervisory staff in training methods and techniques for on-the-job training.

Maintains resource library materials, training aids and equipment; orders training materials; coordinates the scheduling of personnel in training programs and the maintenance of related records.

Prepares periodic reports on program progress and makes revisions to the curriculum as required.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of heavy duty truck or transit coach mechanics, power plants, electrical systems, HVAC, pneumatics, hydraulics, transmissions, and related components.

Considerable knowledge of the planning and conducting of bus maintenance training programs.

Knowledge of general adult education theories and principles.

Knowledge of current federal guidelines and state requirements for certification of work force.

Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of bus maintenance training programs.

Ability to develop training courses designed to disseminate highly technical information to individuals with varying levels of education.

Ability to present classroom instruction, conduct seminars,and perform hands on training to achieve bus maintenance training objectives.

Ability to evaluate technical material related to buses and bus maintenance training programs.

Ability to prepare and submit accurate reports on training programs and mechanic performance.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials, and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, or political affiliation.

Desirable Experience and Training

Graduation from high school supplemented by additional course work in heavy duty truck or diesel mechanics and training and education; considerable experience in bus maintenance, including experience in adult education and training; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a CDL with Air Brake and Passenger endorsements and a Federal 608 Certification.
