PRINTING TECHNICIAN II

NATURE OF WORK

This is skilled reproduction work operating offset presses in a centralized printing service.

Employees in this class prepare, adjust, operate and maintain large and complex offset printing press equipment using presensitized aluminum and similar lithographic plates. Work involves responsibility for printing half tones, large solid areas and two color, using the largest presses to produce multiple copies. Duties require producing work requiring close registration and two color process, as well as performing the necessary preventive maintenance tasks on the press. Supervision is received from a technical supervisor who spot checks completed work and assists in correcting equipment malfunctions and printing problems that arise.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This classification is distinguished from a Printing Technician I by the responsibility for maintenance and operation of complex offset printing press equipment and producing two color work.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Examines job order to determine press operating time.

Adjusts offset presses to correct setting and makes necessary preventive maintenance checks.

Washes lithographic plate to remove coating, applies sheets of folio to back of plate, installs on cylinder and operates press to secure proof copy; examines proof and adjusts press controls to obtain specific registration.

Prints a variety of letterheads, forms, booklets and brochures; produces two color process work requiring close registration.

Operates various types of bindery equipment such as drills, folders, collators and staplers when needed.

Performs maintenance and minor repair tasks such as cleaning and lubrication, feed roller adjustment, replacement cylinder pressure adjustment and idler roller adjustment.

Operates copy camera, enlarger, and related equipment.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of computer and related equipment.

Knowledge of the operating characteristics of large offset press machinery.

Knowledge of the various types of bindery equipment used in offset printing.

Knowledge of basic maintenance and service procedures used in offset printing.

Knowledge of the two color process.

Some knowledge of photolithography as applied to using presensitized aluminum plates.

Some knowledge of stock specifications and quantity estimating.

Ability to perform work requiring close registration and two color process.

Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to detect equipment malfunctions and to make the necessary adjustments or requests repair service.

Ability to keep simple records of work produced.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

Skill in the operation of offset presses and auxiliary equipment.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school; experience in the operation of offset presses and related equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
