NATURE OF WORK
This is maintenance work and riding instruction at a rental horse stable and farm animal exhibit at a county regional park.
Work involves participating in the routine care and maintenance of horses and farm animals including medication and treatment of injuries and illnesses, maintaining pastures and fences, farm animal exhibit area and security of animals, with limited stable management functions. Incumbent is an accomplished rider leading group trail rides and/or conducting group riding lessons, handling rental of trail horses and pony rides, and educating the general public on the history and care of the farm animals and horses. Work is performed under the general supervision within standard policies and is subject to review in progress and upon completion.
This classification is distinguished from a Stable Attendant I by the responsibilities of performing as a lead worker as well as the additional experience required.
Performs maintenance work in a rental horse stable and farm animal exhibit area; maintains interior and exterior and related area in a clean and orderly condition.
Assists in the routine care and maintenance of horses and farm animals including routine health care, administration of medication and treatment of injuries and illnesses as directed.
Oversees the cleaning and maintenance of tack and related equipment.
Assists in managing a rental horse stable and farm animal exhibit area; supervises stable and farm area in absence of a superior.
Maintains health records of horses and farm animals.
Assists with administrative tasks and with the implementation of various programs and procedures.
Guides trail rides of horses.
Assists in educating the general public on the history and care of the farm animals and horses.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of the maintenance and operational requirements of a rental horse stable and farm animal exhibit area.
Ability to work with and around horses and farm animals.
Some knowledge of the hazards inherent in the operation of a rental horse stable and farm animal exhibit area.
Some knowledge of animal first aid.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to properly walk, trot, and cantor a horse.
Ability to maintain control of their horse while assisting other riders.
Ability to assist in the instruction of beginner riders.
Ability to effectively communicate and explain basic riding skills and the history and care of the animals and horses.
Ability to assist in managing a rental horse stable and farm exhibit area.
Ability to assist with administrative tasks and with the implementation of various programs and procedures.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school; experience in the maintenance and operation of a rental horse stable and farm exhibit area; and some experience instructing beginner riders; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
