PORT EVERGLADES PAINTER

NATURE OF WORK
 
This is skilled work at the journey level in painting buildings, fixtures, signs and various equipment.
 
Work involves the application of paint to a variety of surfaces using a brush, roller or spray gun. Work includes the preparation of surfaces and materials for painting and occasional hazardous work from scaffolding. Work requires individual skilled performance in accordance with standard trade practices. Employees receive assignments orally or through written job orders. Work is reviewed while in process and upon completion.
 
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
 
Prepares surfaces to be painted; removes dirt, scales, rust, old paint, grease, and other materials; scrapes and sands surfaces and applies sizing, grit or sandblasts; operates disk sanders or power brushes.
 
Mixes and matches paints and stains using the proper proportions of pigment, base, and thinner; mixes "two-part" paint, varnish and lacquer products.
 
Applies paint to interiors and exteriors of buildings; applies paint to buildings, furniture, equipment, pipes, and other fixtures; uses spray gun, rollers and brushes.
 
Stains shelving, benches, tables, cabinets, or other fixtures or structures using a brush, rag, spray gun or by dipping into various stains prior to lacquering or varnishing.
 
Rigs and erects scaffolding; hauls and erects ladders.
 
Applies waterproofing to building walls; cuts old caulking compounds and inserts new.
 
Repairs damaged spots in furniture; applies paint remover; neutralizes spots, sands and/or scrapes it.
 
Cleans brushes and spray guns and makes minor repairs to equipment and apparatus.
 
Performs related work as required.
 
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
 
Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and practices of the painting trade.
 
Knowledge of rigging and scaffolding, and the hazards and safety precautions of painting work.
 
Ability to work at considerable heights from scaffolding.
 
Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor.
 
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
 
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
 
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, political affiliation, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or gender identity and expression.
 
Skill in the use and care of paint brushes, spray guns, and other equipment of the painting trade.
 
Skill in mixing paints and matching and blending colors.
 
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
 
Successful completion of job related tests. Four (4) years experience as a journey level painter desired.
 
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
 
Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License at time of appointment.
