NATURE OF WORK
This is advanced technical and analytical work involving the operation, repair and maintenance of a large data communications network composed of various communication hardware. Employee conducts field-intensive work to oversee and assist in the repair and installation of the network equipment.
Work involves installing and repairing of terminals, lines, and modems; troubleshooting a large system network environment; and interfacing with outside telecommunication vendors. Incumbent reviews and performs site analysis of customer installation requests and recommends the most cost effective manner to implement network solutions. Work is reviewed by an administrative superior through weekly status meetings, reports, and daily contact.
This classification is distinguished from the Communications Network Technician II classification by the more advanced level of duties, additional education and experience required, and the lead worker responsibilities.
Documents troubleshooting procedures for the network equipment.
Trains new and existing staff in troubleshooting techniques and methods; acts as lead worker to subordinate Communication Network Technicians.
Troubleshoots and repairs terminals, personal computers, various modems and network lines and communication components.
Promotes team work among staff and coworkers.
Interfaces effectively with users to determine their communication needs and recommends cost-efficient solutions.
Adapts to the dynamic requirements of supporting a large, on-line network environment.
Directs the Data Communication Technician's work activities at the various geographical job locations; checks and ensures the quality of work performed by the data communication technicians.
Performs network repairs and service work as required.
Performs on-site analysis to determine job complexity and dependencies.
Provides technical work, research and recommendations on network hardware and diagnostics equipment.
Supervises and assists in the installation and maintenance of the data communications equipment.
Performs the installation, testing and evaluation of diagnostic equipment.
Writes and maintains documentation for the network.
Ensures that organizational policies are followed and reports unresolved data communications problems to the next support tier promptly.
Oversees and verifies the quality of work performed by the outside vendors.
Performs related work as required.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school, supplemented by college level course work in electronics, data communications, computer science or related field; considerable experience in the installation, troubleshooting, and repairing of on-line devices, lines and modems in a large network, including some experience in the supervisory aspects of the work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
