LOSS CONTROL SPECIALIST

NATURE OF WORK

This is administrative and field work in an employee safety and accident prevention program.

Work involves inspection of facilities, work sites, work crews, employee working conditions, mechanical equipment, personal protective equipment and vehicles in order to prevent employee accidents. Work also involves developing and presenting safety programs which will educate employees in safe working procedures. Routine inspections are performed independently. Overall performance is reviewed by a supervisor through observation and reports for adherence to established policies and practices.

May provide supervision, training, and direction to subordinate staff.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Inspects facilities for compliance with applicable safety and health standards and regulations; notes conditions within the county that may be hazardous to the health and/or safety of county employees or the public; recommends corrective action.

Develops and presents safety education and training seminars.

Assists inspectors from other agencies in making safety/health inspections of facilities.

Makes recommendations with respect to safety equipment purchases, improvement of work methods/conditions and the elimination of job hazards.

Conducts surveys and compiles data as requested with respect to safety related projects.

Inspects county vehicles for required safety equipment and safe mechanical conditions.

Investigates reported unsafe vehicle conditions.

Inspects work sites, working conditions, equipment and safety items for compliance with safety standards and county regulations.

May direct the work assignments of employees responsible for supporting life safety systems.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, ANSI and other applicable standards/regulations and procedures.

Considerable knowledge of Federal and State of Florida hazardous chemicals lists, hazardous waste handling and disposal, "Right To Know" laws and industrial hygiene.

Ability to recognize hazardous conditions, formulate solutions and summarize facts in a concise written report.

Ability to accumulate data and prepare statistical reports.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in engineering or industrial environmental compliance, loss control, public or business administration, or related field; two (2) years experience in safety inspection, accident investigation or evaluation, reporting, and safe handling of hazardous materials; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
