AVIATION ASSISTANT PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER

NATURE OF WORK

 

This is professional work assisting with the coordination of public and media relations for the Broward County Aviation Department.

 

Responds to news media and public inquiries. Responds to airport emergencies and assists in media responses. Coordinates with other airport agencies and tenants on media/public relations.   

 

Produces electronic and printed news letters, manages and supervises film-video commercial production on airport property and assists in the preparation of special events and functions.

 

Assignments are received in the form of broad policy statements.   Work is reviewed through conferences, reports and program achievements.

 

 

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

 

Responds to requests for airport information.  

 

Interfaces with the media and general public on a routine basis regarding airport activities, emergencies, issues, objectives and progress of airport programs and initiatives.  

 

Acts in the absence of the Aviation Public Information Officer.

 

Contacts media representatives to promote upcoming airport activities and events and to arrange for media coverage.   Prepares and submits press releases as required.

 

Writes, edits and prepares digital imagery for departmental publications. Conducts research and produces text and photocopies for articles and ads featuring the airport for internal and external use.   Provides letters, memos, text, and other presentation materials for the department staff as required.

 

Prepares newsletters for distribution to employees, tenants, community organizations, aviation trade publications, transportation organizations and the media.

 

Serves as a liaison for film shoots at the airport.   Coordinates shoots with other agencies and conducts walk-throughs with film crews to minimize interference with airport operations.

 

Maintains the airport radio station.   Record, update and edit messages as required.   Troubleshoot the system and coordinate repairs as needed.

 

Coordinates special events activities (i.e. new airline service, new facilities) and conducts airport tours to special interest groups as requested.

 

Serves as a liaison with the Airport Community Outreach program and staff to assist with coordination of airport information in response to community requests for information.

 

Performs related work as required.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

 

Knowledge of the principles and practices of journalism and public relations involving the preparation and dissemination of informational material to all types of media.

 

Knowledge of local, state and federal regulations pertaining to the aviation industry, including security, safety, aircraft operations, emergency procedures and control of air traffic.

 

Knowledge of principles and practices of publishing, graphic arts, filming and production.

Knowledge of correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.

 

Ability to relate well verbally and in written media with a variety of audiences and to respond to issues on a broad range of topics.

 

Ability to prepare and deliver electronic media presentations.

 

Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with representatives of the press, radio, and television, county and community officials and groups, airline representatives and other groups and individuals as required.

 

Ability to represent the airport and the County before mass media during a variety of emergency situations occurring at the airport.

 

Ability to exercise sound judgment in decision making.

 

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of BrowardCounty's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, color, religion, age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, marital status or political affiliation.

 

Excellent oral, written and graphic communications skills and the ability to effectively respond to issues on a broad range of topics.

 

Skill in use of graphic communications and photographic equipment to prepare media documents and presentations.

 

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with major course work in journalism, communications, public relations, public administration or related field;   four (4) years experience in journalism, media or public relations or closely related field; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.

 

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

 

Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License.

 

Must be able to pass a criminal background check and obtain and maintain federally mandated security clearances for working at an airport.
