This is professional engineering work in the design and review of a wide variety of engineering projects.

Work involves preparing and reviewing design specifications of construction and maintenance plans of county facilities, and providing coordination, technical direction and supervision to subordinates. Employees in this class receive assignments in specific or general terms from an engineering superior and are expected to exercise independent judgment and initiative in developing work methods. An engineering superior provides guidance and reviews all design work.


Prepares and checks preliminary and final plans and designs for a variety of county facilities, such as streets, sewers, bridges, and drainage projects; establishes grades and locations on plans for water, sewer, street, and related construction; prepares cost estimates.

Provides coordination, technical direction, and supervision to subordinates engaged in the maintenance and construction of utility plants.

Reviews various sources of information to determine the effect of short and long term transportation projects and integrates the information into a transportation modeling computer system.

Assists with investigations to determine the extent of remedial required at a contaminated site.

Provides coordination and supervision to the activities of subordinate sub-professional engineering personnel engaged in the inspection of public works construction projects; participates in the inspection of major projects and industrial facilities for compliance with plans, specifications and regulations.

Directs and trains personnel in inspection and materials testing procedures and techniques.

Performs special research and investigates complaints pertaining to public works functions; advises public on policies regarding public works activities.

Provides information to the general public regarding engineering data maintained by the County.

Performs engineering work of equivalent complexity in the assigned area of engineering specialization, such as civil, mechanical or electrical engineering.

Performs related work as required.


Knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering as applied to the design and construction of a variety of county public works and industrial facilities.

Knowledge of land and engineering survey systems, methods, and techniques.

Knowledge of established policies, procedures and regulations.

Ability to adapt approved engineering methods and standards to the design and construction of a variety of county public works and industrial facilities.

Skill in the use of engineering drafting and surveying equipment.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.


Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in civil engineering or field of specialization appropriate to area of assignment; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
