NATURE OF WORK
This is complex independent and supervisory accounting clerical work.
Work involves responsibility for supervising a complex accounting activity such as accounts receivable, general ledger, and disbursements within a large and complex accounting office. Work includes supervision of subordinate accounting clerks in auditing and posting duties, maintaining accounting records, and preparing accounting reports and summary statements. Considerable independent judgment and initiative are required to insure that transactions are in accordance with correct accounting procedures and statutory requirements. Duties are performed in accordance with standard office accounting procedures and with statutory requirements. Work is reviewed for accuracy and conformance to policy.
This classification is distinguished from an Account Clerk II by the supervisory responsibilities associated with the position as well as the ability of the incumbent to act independently on advanced level bookkeeping operations and by the additional experience required.
Supervises the maintenance of disbursement accounts for the County, including encumbering of purchases, auditing of invoices, preparing vouchers, posting, reconciling, and preparing trial balances and other necessary reports.
Supervises the maintenance of accounts receivable records, including the daily reports on collections, posting of figures to general ledger, and the taking of trial balances and preparation of billing statements.
Compiles data and prepares statistical reports to assist supervisors in such accounting areas as budgeting or purchasing.
Supervises the examination of vouchers, invoices, audit reports, or other posting media to determine their accuracy, completeness and conformance with laws and regulations.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of governmental bookkeeping practices and procedures.
Considerable knowledge of office accounting methods and procedures.
Ability to interpret and apply laws and regulations pertaining to the financial records maintained.
Ability to present information clearly and concisely in oral and written form.
Ability to plan, organize, and review work of subordinate clerical and bookkeeping personnel.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Successful completion of job related tests. Four (4) years experience in journey level bookkeeping work desired.
