NATURE OF WORK
This is limited technical work in assisting on engineering field projects.
Work involves responsibility for performing entry-level surveying tasks and related field or office work associated with an engineering survey party. Assignments may involve extreme physical exertion in their accomplishment. Instructions are received from a technical superior and work is performed under close supervision with little independent judgment or action required.
Acts as rodman or chainman on an engineering survey party; may serve as relief transitman on simple assignments.
Clears line-of-sight through brush or trees using machete or ax; uses shovel or pickax to dig for hidden utility pipes or lines; uses sledgehammer to drive stakes for grades and alignment.
Sets up and maintains survey instruments; sets up and may operate level instrument.
Takes some field notes; makes simple mathematical calculations.
Measures distances accurately using chain or tape measure.
May take depth soundings of bodies of water using a boat or wader boots.
Uses Philadelphia Rod, linker rod, or range rods.
Maintains service truck and instruments.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Some knowledge of the standard instruments, terminology, techniques and practices of surveying.
Some knowledge of mathematics through trigonometry.
Ability to make standard engineering computations accurately.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability and physical stamina to engage in active field work for extended periods and occasionally under adverse weather conditions, when required by the nature of the assignments.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
Skill in the use of assigned surveying equipment as requires by job assignment; skill in the use of hand tools and measuring instruments.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Successful completion of job related tests.
