HEALTH SERVICES WORKER

NATURE OF WORK

 

This is para-professional technical and clerical health services work with a County health program.

 

Work involves performing a variety of para-professional technical health services related work in caring for patients, maintaining health services records and supplies, and transporting patients or medicines to clinics or hospitals.

 

Duties include setting appointment schedules for an assigned program or facility, typing and related clerical work, accounting for a variety of medical and office supplies, accepting monies for medical fees and prescriptions and performing other health services not requiring the attention of practical or professional nurses. Work assignments are received through analysis of results obtained and conformance with clinical procedures.

 

Supervision is provided through conferences with supervisor and adherence to established policies and procedures.

 

 

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS     

(Tasks may vary slightly based on area of assignment).

 

Assists nursing staff in performing routine tasks associated with their job functions. Attends and participates in staff meetings.

 

Completes client or patient documentation in adherence to agency guidelines, as required for the area of assignment, using basic computer-based office applications.

 

Educates patients regarding special diets, exercise, etc., as assigned.

 

Maintains confidentiality of consumer and related information as regulated under public health laws, JCAHO standards, federal confidentiality laws (42CFR, 45CFR), and state regulations (65D-30).

 

May assist with admission and discharge from health care facilities and/or programs.

 

May assist with inventorying medical and office supplies in order to m aintain adequate stock of medical supplies and office supplies for the assigned area or facility.

 

May assist with maintaining the cleanliness of the facility and in providing a safe and protected environment for program participants and staff.

 

May conduct home visits or interviews of health services applicants; prepares routing reports of findings and recommendations.

 

May collect and record receipt of monies for medical fees and prescriptions and other services.

 

May deliver medicine and transport patients to and from program facilities for program related health care or other support services.

 

May enter data into departmental, divisional, agency, and/or ADM mandated software programs for charting, discharge, billing, and other related purposes.  

 

May schedule visits of patients to health services centers.

 

May sterilize medical trays, surgical instruments, and/or other medical equipment.

 

Monitors personal safety and living environment of program participants.

 

Participates in educational programs to maintain and increase job knowledge and skills.

 

Provides general administrative support such as filing, answering telephones, and logging in program participants.

 

Records patients' social and medical history; assists patients in determining eligibility and applying for available financial assistance, including Medicare.

 

Takes and records patient vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, weight, temperature.

 

Types forms, reports, and related materials; maintains current drug price lists; maintains records and files.

 

Performs related work as required.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of public health laws, JCAHO standards, federal confidentiality laws (42CFR, 45CFR), and state regulations (65D-30).

 

Knowledge of the team approach and ability to work cooperatively with others as an effective team member.

 

Some knowledge of community health care and financial aid programs, such as Medicare and Medicaid.

 

Some knowledge of techniques and practices used in cleaning, sterilizing, packaging, and issuing of medical supplies and equipment.

 

Some knowledge of the needs, problems and attitudes of health services patients, relatives, families, nurses, and physicians.

 

Some knowledge of the various records and supplies maintained in health services centers.

 

Ability to attend to the needs of others.

 

Ability to communicate and interact professionally and effectively with program participants who may have addiction/substance abuse, mental health, and/or co-occurring disorders, and with the general public.

 

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

 

Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with program participants and the public.

 

Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely.

 

Ability to perform a variety of clerical tasks relative to health services activities.

 

Ability to prepare correspondence, notices, schedules, and related materials as needed.

 

Ability to react quickly and calmly in crisis and emergency situations.

 

Ability to take vital signs.

 

Ability to transport patients and medication as required by assignment.

 

Ability to use a personal computer and basic software applications.

 

Ability to utilize empathy skills effectively.

 

Skill in the operation of a typewriter as required by assignment.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

Graduation from high school or equivalent; six (6) months of experience in public health or medical services work involving social and para-professional technical health related activities; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.

 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

 

Based on area of assignment, may be required to posses a valid Florida driver = s license and be able to drive and to obtain and maintain authority to drive on County business.
