NATURE OF WORK
This is interpreting work in conjunction with the provision of social services to a wide variety of refugee ethnic groups.
Work involves assisting social workers, community development workers, health professionals and others by providing interpreting services and in determining refugee needs.
Work is reviewed for results obtained.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS Presented in no particular order.
Answers emergency telephone inquiries at refugee multi‑purpose center and provides information and referral services to refugees in the office and in the community.
Creates and maintains records of activities and participants; submits reports as required. May use basic computer-based software applications.
Directs clients to appropriate social services resources.
Provides interpreting services to social workers in county, state government, and federal agencies.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS Presented in no particular order.
Knowledge of appropriate foreign language or languages.
Some knowledge of social, psychological, mental, medical and environmental factors resulting in crises which render clients temporarily indigent.
Ability to maintain records and communicate effectively orally and in writing in English and other appropriate languages.
Ability to learn and use basic computer-based office applications.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of BrowardCounty's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, ethnicity, religion, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, or political affiliation.
REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school; fluency in English and appropriate foreign language or languages; six (6) months of experience in immigrant client community; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQURIEMENT
May be required to possess a valid Florida driver’s license and be able to drive and to obtain and maintain authority to drive on County business.
