PRINT SHOP SUPERVISOR

NATURE OF WORK

This is administrative and supervisory work in a central printing and duplicating shop for the various County departments.

Work includes managing print shop activities, as well as participating in the more difficult jobs. Duties include establishing and ensuring that production schedules are met for requesting departments and agencies. Supervision is exercised over a staff of technical and clerical personnel engaged in offset reproduction and duplicating processes. Duties require independent judgment in determining proper printing methods, controlling work and solving print shop operations problems. Work also includes preparing and administering the internal service fund budget of the central print shop. Work is reviewed by observation of work services provided, quality of work product and satisfactory completion of production schedules.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Supervises, plans and assigns the work of technicians involved in a variety of offset printing and photo lithography services and operates the more complex reproduction equipment.

Supervises the operation of special purpose machinery such as offset presses, folding, stitching, paper drilling, padding and cutting equipment.

Advises department officials on work to be done, methods used, priority of work and related problems; participates in work to meet varying requirements.

Estimates time, equipment, materials, supplies and costs for various types of reproduction work.

Prepares and submits requisitions to ensure the maintenance of sufficient equipment and supply levels; maintains records and prepares reports.

Assists in preparation of the central print shop budget; administers budget.

Trains subordinates in the proper utilization of duplicating and printing equipment.

Attends trade shows and various demonstrations of printing equipment; recommends purchasing equipment for County print shop.

Participates in meetings related to the County's printing needs.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Thorough knowledge of the operation, limitations and adoptabilities of offset presses, duplicating machines and auxiliary equipment.

Thorough knowledge of the papers, inks, chemicals and other supplies used in printing and duplicating by means of multi-lith and other types of machinery.

Thorough knowledge of machine adjustments required in performing a wide variety of duplicating and printing work utilizing offset and duplicating processes.

Thorough knowledge of photo lithography.

Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates and to instruct them in proper work methods and procedures.

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work to meet fluctuations in work load.

Ability to manage the operational and financial activities of a central printing and duplicating operation.

Ability to maintain records and to prepare and submit reports.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school; thorough experience in the operation of offset presses and related equipment, including considerable supervisory experience in the operation of a print shop; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
