DATA CONTROL SUPERVISOR

NATURE OF WORK

This is supervisory data processing work in a large centralized data processing operation.

Employees in this class are responsible for supervising and coordinating a production operation engaged in the delivery, distribution and reproduction of data processing generated output. Emphasis of the work is on coordinating the work of the data control section, scheduling employees to work, consulting with officials of user departments to resolve scheduling and delivery problems, and developing new and revised operational procedures. Responsibilities include assuring that work is performed consistently within established departmental policies, procedures and standards. Supervision is exercised over supervisory, technical and clerical employees assigned to various shifts and work stations. Supervision is received from an administrative and technical superior who holds the incumbent responsible for producing scheduling and operational efficiency.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Plans, assigns and reviews the work of subordinate supervisory, technical and clerical employees engaged in the receipt, delivery, distribution and reproduction of data processing generated output.

Prepares schedules for employees in a production operation. Advises and consults with officials of user departments to resolve scheduling and delivery problems.

Coordinates work flow to assure continuity between shipping and receiving and other computer processes.

Reviews data processing outputs for accuracy prior to distribution to user departments.

Assures compliance with established departmental policies, procedures and standards.

Evaluates and installs new and revised work flow procedures to improve operational performance.

Prepares and submits a variety of unit activity reports.

Makes recommendations regarding hiring, discipline and promotion of subordinates; authorizes leave and overtime; reviews performance reports prepared by subordinates and rates employee performance.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of computer scheduling requirements in a large centralized data processing operations.

Considerable knowledge of Job Control Language and its application.

Considerable knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of data processing peripheral equipment.

Considerable knowledge of various job applications processed by centralized data processing equipment.

Considerable knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.

Knowledge of departmental policies, procedures and established performance standards.

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate production procedures.

Ability to supervise subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Ability to analyze and resolve scheduling and delivery problems.

Ability to coordinate work between shifts in a multi-shift operation to assure continuity of work flow.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school; considerable experience in the operation of data processing peripheral equipment and related work in a large-scale computer production support service; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
