GRAPHICS SUPERVISOR

NATURE OF WORK

This is advanced technical and supervisory work in the direction and operations of a graphic arts section.

Work involves planning, assigning and supervising the work of subordinate graphics designers. Work requires a high level of skill in managing high-volume production of print materials and other related collateral materials. The incumbent is responsible for developing and instituting a training program for subordinate personnel. Work is performed with considerable independence within the scope of professional methods and procedures to accomplish assigned projects. Supervision is received from an administrative superior who reviews work for attainment of desired overall results.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Directs and counsels subordinate designers on work related activities.

Assigns work to graphics designers and monitors production levels.

Reviews work of graphic designers for efficiency and quality control through daily observation and reporting methods.

Maintains up-to-date knowledge about new technologies in the graphic art field and makes recommendations for improvements.

Performs complex graphic design work as necessary using computer graphic programs.

May supervise and participate in the preparation of intricate graphics of data for display to illustrate and support studies and planning programs.

Performs activities related to maintaining a World Wide Web site.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of graphic design, color and typography.

Thorough knowledge in print production including four-color process work.

Thorough knowledge in the operation of a computer and the use of graphic design software programs.

Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, organization and administration.

Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates.

Ability to interpret and present abstract ideas in creative, pictorial graphic forms.

Ability to plan, implement and coordinate technical and administrative programs.

Ability to analyze facts and exercise sound judgement in decision making.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Completion of two years of college level course work in commercial arts, graphic design or related field; thorough experience in commercial art and in the operation of desktop publishing programs; including considerable experience in the supervisory aspects of the work, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
