NATURE OF WORK
This is a supervisory position in the operation and maintenance of county bridges, primarily drawbridges.
Work involves performing related skilled and semi-skilled electrical and mechanical tasks in the operation and maintenance of a bridge, and supervisory responsibilities including planning, scheduling and assigning the work of a staff or contractors. Work is performed under the general supervision of a superior and is reviewed through conferences, reports and evaluations of operating efficiency.
Maintains watch for water traffic and operates bridge and traffic control devices in response to proper boat signals.
Plans, schedules and assigns the work of a staff or contractor; develops and maintains operating plans to ensure safe and efficient bridge operations.
Inspects mechanical and electrical devices for defects or malfunctions and takes corrective actions either by self or through a contractor
Supervises maintenance and repairs of movable and fixed bridges or related structures
Maintains bridge lighting by turning bridge lights off and on at proper times and ensuring that burned out lights and fuses are replaced.
Estimates costs and requisitions materials;, maintains records; prepares and submits reports.
Supervises and approves entries in the time card system of subordinate employees
Responds to emergencies and be available for standby duties.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of the rules and regulations controlling the operation of drawbridges spanning navigable waters of the County.
Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of drawbridges, heavy electrical motors and power driven hoisting machinery and equipment.
Knowledge of Coast Guard regulations.
Knowledge of County administrative policies and procedures pertaining to purchasing and personnel. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to keep records and to prepare reports.
Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates.
Ability to react promptly and correctly in emergency situations.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
Skill in the use of mechanical tools to maintain and adjust motors and other bridge machinery.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Four (4) years experience in the operation of drawbridges.
