TRANSIT SCHEDULER I

NATURE OF WORK

This is specialized technical work in planning, scheduling and routing of vehicles in the Transportation Department, Transit Division.

Work involves planning and scheduling the daily work assignments of bus operators and scheduling vehicle travel times along existing routes in the transit system.   Work also involves planning and designing new routes and schedules to meet operating requirements and changing demands.   Work includes writing transit schedules, breaking down schedules into runs, preparing passenger and terminal schedules, and compiling statistics and reports on operations.   Work requires the use of some independent judgment and discretion in determining the most efficient and economical bus schedules.   Work is reviewed for compliance with transit operating policies and procedures by the Transit Scheduler II and/or Superintendent who provides advice and assistance on unusual or difficult problems.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Drafts transit schedules and creates run selections  and prepares daily work assignments for all operators to select their daily work assignments;  schedules driver work shifts and schedules picks of work assignments and vacations.

Assists in scheduling and designing bus routes and travel times; breaks down schedules into runs by hours and days off to facilitate operator selection in accordance with procedures and contract.

Assists in developing new routes to meet changing operating and passenger demands; drafts passenger and terminal schedules.

Makes rough drafts of maps and timetables; maintains detailed maps of all routes and schedules.

Provides technical assistance on Hastus or other Scheduling Software.

Performs data uploads for such programs as Hastinfo, Smart Trac, Google Transit, APC and AVL programs.

Compiles and analyzes statistics on passenger loads, on time performance, route mileage, time intervals, run time analysis, and passenger transfer activity; prepares routing and special reports on operations, routes and schedules, and frequency/headways.

Coordinates and distributes time-sensitive information to internal staff related to all service changes.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of public transit scheduling and planning.

Knowledge of primary and secondary roads, general traffic hazards and restrictions of traffic.

Ability to analyze complex information and to exercise independent judgment in arriving at conclusions.

Ability to interpret transit work rules and union labor agreements.

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.

Ability to conduct and lead meetings with BCT staff and local community based groups when presenting information regarding scheduling and to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, political affiliation, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or gender identity and expression.

Skill in using computer-based scheduling and spread sheet programs.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school; four (4) years of experience in public transit planning and/or transportation scheduling operations; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
