NATURE OF WORK
This is specialized instructional work in the training of bus operators in the Mass Transit Division.
Work involves conducting all phases of new operator training, including instruction on the road, in the classroom, and through individual counseling sessions.
Work also involves conducting field and classroom accident prevention training and safety education programs for all bus operators.
Employees in this class are provided latitude for independent judgment and discretion in evaluating student performance and progress while operating under the scope of established departmental rules, regulations and procedures.
Work is reviewed by a superior through oral and written reports and observation of program effectiveness.
Conducts training sessions on the roadways in order to teach bus operators the mechanical operation of the bus and safe driving habits; demonstrates the techniques of public conveyance operation as related to time schedules, street routes, and passenger transport.
Conducts classroom training, including such topics as passenger courtesy, money handling, accident and emergency procedures, defensive driving, and personnel policies and procedures.
Conducts refresher training for experienced bus operators in safe driving methods.
Coordinates and participates in training programs for road supervisors and dispatchers.
Prepares a variety of illustrative materials and guides, including motion pictures, slides and photographs; distributes and uses safety educational materials in classroom presentations.
Rides buses to observe the driving habits and general conduct of the operator; submits reports on performance observed.
Counsels with operators having an excessive number of accidents in order to ascertain underlying causes of accident proneness and attitude problems.
Reviews all accident reports; maintains accident records and statistics which are used for training and counseling purposes.
Prepares records and reports on attendance, grades, and attitude of drivers.
Prepares periodic reports on program progress and makes revisions to the curriculum as required.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of operational characteristics of passenger buses.
Considerable knowledge of accepted methods and techniques of safe driving with particular emphasis on passenger transport vehicles.
Ability to teach techniques and procedures of safe bus operation.
Ability to prepare and submit accurate reports on training progress and driver performance.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of BrowardCounty's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, color, religion, age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, marital status or political affiliation.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Successful completion of job related tests. Four (4) years experience in bus operation desired.
