NATURE OF WORK
This is responsible public relations and communications work with the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitor's Bureau.
Work involves managing a major contracted public relations agency in charge of the national and international media for the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). Position incumbent acts as bureau spokesperson to promote tourism and convention business in Broward County, maintains contact with all media and composes and designs collateral materials. Supervision may be exercised over subordinates. Work is performed with considerable independent judgment and initiative within established guidelines. Work is reviewed periodically through conferences, written reports and observation of results obtained.
Plans, directs and coordinates the activities of a contracted public relations agency responsible for the promotion of the tourism and convention trades in Broward County; coordinates press trips, itineraries, and press releases; approves expenses; coordinates special events and community outreach programs.
Maintains contact with all regional, national and international media; coordinates interviews with CVB officials; answers specific inquiries from the press and general public regarding Broward tourism.
Researches, composes and designs collateral materials; writes press releases, public service announcements and newsletters.
Organizes on-going luncheons for the hospitality industry.
Coordinates with local trade associations; represents CVB at meetings.
Prepares and submits special reports as required.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of tourism, public relations and communications.
Thorough knowledge of journalistic principles and practices, and the techniques of composing and editing publicity materials.
Considerable knowledge of English usage and the press, and the requirements of radio and television broadcasters.
Ability to write and assemble interesting and informative news releases and collateral publicity materials.
Ability to plan, organize and direct the work of subordinate specialists.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, political affiliation, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or gender identity and expression.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in journalism, communications, public relations, or related field; six (6) years experience in public relations, travel, tourism or journalism work; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
