NATURE OF WORK
This is administrative, management and advanced structural architectural work in developing and managing the design and development of buildings and facilities.
Work involves the application of professional knowledges and skills to the management of design, development, and construction of buildings and facilities. Work involves the supervision of professional and sub-professional assistants engaged in architectural field, office, and drafting work. Duties include reviewing and approving all plans and specifications submitted by consultants, contractors, and other agencies. Assignments are received in the form of specific requirements or general objectives, or are developed by the employee as he examines buildings and facilities assets and requirements. An employee in this class is expected to carry assignments to completion with considerable independence in accordance with program objectives, professional standards, policies and procedures. Work is subject to review by an administrative superior through conferences, reports, and observation of results obtained.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Supervises and participates in preliminary field surveys; develops, designs, and drafts preliminary plans for buildings and facilities.
Provides architectural input regarding county plans for capital improvements and energy conservation programs.
Assists in the preparation of the annual budget.
Develops and approves requests for architectural consulting services for all county agencies.
Directs and participates in research and special studies pertaining to buildings and facilities development and maintenance; prepares reports and recommendations for the review of a superior.
Serves as a member of all architectural consulting, selection and
negotiating committees.
Inspects and supervises construction projects while in progress and upon completion for adherence to plans and specifications.
Supervises subordinate personnel in preparing plans, specifications, and preliminary construction layouts and cost estimates.
Participates in the formulation and implementation of management recom-mendations.
Seals and signs architectural plans, drawings, and documents.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of structural architecture as applied to the design, construction, and maintenance of public buildings and facilities.
Thorough knowledge of the current literature, trends and developments in the field of architecture.
Thorough knowledge of management practices and administrative processes.
Ability to adapt approved architectural methods and standards to the design, construction, and inspection of a variety of facility related public works projects.
Ability to plan, direct, and coordinate the work of subordinates.
Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work in situations where numerous diverse demands are involved.
Ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, or political affiliation.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in architecture; thorough experience in building and facilities design and development, including experience in a supervisory and management capacity; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Registration as a Professional Architect in the State of Florida.
SPECIAL NOTE
In those instances in which a registered architect signs any document for the County in the performance of his/her regular work, that employee shall be accorded such protection and immunity from any lawsuit as a result of his/her conduct within the scope of his/her employment to the extent provided by law.
