HYDROGEOLOGIST IV

NATURE OF WORK

 

This is advanced professional and administrative work overseeing the technical activities of a wide range of hydrogeological projects in the County.

 

Work involves supervising and participating in the analysis and review of complex hydrogeology studies, assessments and remediation designs.

 

Work requires the application of advanced hydrogeological scientific skills and knowledge in the evaluation of contaminated sites and affords opportunities to exercise considerable independent judgment in developing and completing projects. Assignments are received in the form of broad instructions and general program objectives.

 

Performance is reviewed through project results, conferences, and written reports, and for compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory guidelines.

 

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

This class is distinguished from Hydrogeologist III by the need for the incumbent to possess registration as a Professional Geologist.

 

 

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

 

Directs and supervises technical personnel involved in complex hydrogeological studies; analyzes remediation designs pertaining to hazardous waste and chemical contamination sites.

 

Supervises and reviews the activities of environmental consultants and laboratories associated with Superfund and other contaminated sites in which the County has been identified as a Potentially Responsible Party (PRP).

 

Prepares and reviews reports pertaining to the assessment and remediation of CountySuperfund sites.

 

Seals and signs hydrogeology plans and documents.

 

Recommends prioritization of contamination cases for remediation.

 

Serves as senior technical representative on behalf of the Department for Superfund and other hazardous waste sites; interacts with representatives of state and federal regulatory agencies and other county divisions.

 

Conducts special hydrogeological and environmental studies and projects involving other county agencies and organizations.

 

Performs related work as required.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

 

Thorough knowledge of federal, state and county environmental rules and regulations regarding surface and groundwater contamination and well drilling.

 

Considerable knowledge of the current literature, trends and developments in the field of hydrogeology and environmental remediation programs.

 

Considerable knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization and administration.

 

Ability to express ideas effectively both orally and in writing.

 

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of BrowardCounty's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, color, religion, age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, marital status or political affiliation.

 

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

A Masters degree in geology, hydrogeology, civil, chemical or environmental engineering from an accredited college or university; six (6) years of experience in groundwater hydrogeology and the remediation of contaminated sites, including two (2) years of government and regulatory experience and two (2) years of supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

 

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

 

Registration as a Professional Geologist in the State of Florida.

 

 

SPECIAL NOTE

 

In those instances in which a registered geologist signs any document for the County in the performance of his/her regular work, that employee shall be accorded such protection and immunity from any lawsuit as a result of his/her conduct within the scope of his/her employment to the extent provided by law.
