NATURE OF WORK
This is professional work developing and implementing educational programs in the areas of Urban Horticulture, Commercial Horticulture, 4-H Youth Development , Entrepreneurship Development, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Marine Science with specific emphasis on an effort to ensure the application of this knowledge.
An employee in a position allocated to this class is responsible for planning, organizing and presenting educational programs to interested individuals and groups.
Work involves coordinating with the Program Leader, the Division Director and the District Director to plan and implement programs. The emphasis of the work is on promoting quality programs through public information and instruction.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of the Extension Education Division.
This classification is distinguished from the Extension Agent II by the requirement for a Master’s Degree and a minimum of ten (10) years of professional experience in Extension and a reputation as a leader in his/her field.
Plans, implements and conducts educational programs in designated program area to assist people to more effectively interpret and use findings of science and technology.
Works with the program advisory committee to analyze the county situation and identify priority problems; designs and implements a variety of program delivery methods to reach a target audience.
Plans, assigns and supervises the work of subordinate staff and volunteers.
Provides technical assistance to businesses, homeowners, 4-H Clubs, farmers, civic organizations, horticultural groups and other interested parties and groups.
Identifies, recruits and trains volunteer leaders to carry out the program of work in the county.
Provides leadership in coordinating extension programs of a countywide basis.
Develops and uses appropriate systems for reporting program accomplishments.
Conducts clinics and classes to educate and inform individuals and groups on related subjects of interest.
Receives requests for assistance or programs; prepares analyses and evaluations of programs; makes recommendations regarding changes or modifications in existing programs.
Assists in determining and obtaining resources needed to implement the plan of work.
Establishes and maintains rapport with personnel of the mass media and arranges for appropriate releases in the program area.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures and administration of programs of the United States Department of Agriculture, Florida Cooperative Extension Service and BrowardCounty.
Thorough knowledge of human sciences, public and private programs available to the community and methods of utilizing these resources to assist in program delivery.
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of management, organization, program administration, public communication and education.
Considerable knowledge and understanding of multi-cultural and ethnic segments of the population.
Considerable knowledge of current regulations and procedures related to federal, state and local grant procedures.
Ability to initiate and manage multiple programs and priorities.
Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinate staff and volunteers.
Ability to plan and present demonstrations in applicable program area.
Ability to observe and analyze pertinent related problems, to prepare critical reports and to make constructive recommendations.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
A Master’s Degree in education, public or business administration, sociology, psychology or related field as appropriate for assigned position; a minimum of ten (10) years experience in development and management of direct service delivery programs, including five (5) years experience in educational program development; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
