County Announces Major Initiative to
Combat Synthetic Drugs
Broward County, along with partners from law enforcement, the medical community, public schools, faith-based community, and the United Way of Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse announced a collaborative initiative to take aim at the growing dangers of Flakka, a synthetic, highly addictive drug that is wreaking havoc throughout Broward County. In response to the growing epidemic of Flakka usage, the partners have launched a public education and prevention campaign to inform and protect the public from the growing threat. Flakka Making a Dangerous Presence in Broward County
Flakka, or Alpha-PVP, is a potent and highly addictive stimulant/hallucinogen drug that is growing in use nationally as well as in Broward County. Flakka is a synthetic cathinone found in “bath salts” that has been chemically altered so that it is no longer considered an illegal drug. It’s inexpensive to make in China and elsewhere and easy to market worldwide via the internet. It is cheap for dealers to buy and highly profitable to sell. New Substance Abuse Facility in the Works
Broward County is moving forward with its long planned effort to build a new headquarters for the Broward Addiction Recovery Center (BARC) at the corner of SW 27th Street and 4th Avenue. BARC offers a comprehensive range of services for residents affected by substance abuse. The current facility is in a former church with limited space, 34 beds and aging equipment. The new 50-bed facility will feature state-of-the-art equipment and allow for scheduled treatment along with walk-in admittance. Construction is expected to begin in early 2016. More...

The Broward Addiction Recovery Center strives to become an active member and leader of substance abuse treatment and services for the community. Broward Addiction Recovery Center will solidify existing relationships with community organizations to fulfill its mission to provide substance abuse treatment and services to underserved populations and criminal justice defendants. As a leader in the community, Broward Addiction Recovery Center will collaborate with community providers to meet the needs of the community and those who will benefit from its services.
