Together We Can End Sexual Violence and Child Physical Abuse
April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Child Abuse Prevention Month. This year’s theme “Making Meaningful Connections: Creating Safe, Stable, and Nurturing Relationships and Environments for all Children & Safer Campuses” underscores the importance of educating everyone to speak out against sexual assault and child abuse. The Nancy J. Cotterman Center (NJCC) is promoting the prevention of sexual violence and child abuse through special events and public education during the observance. Several local activities planned include:
- Governmental Center Lobby Exhibit- April 1 – 30
A powerful exhibit of survivor art and awareness at the Governmental Center, 115 S. Andrews Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.
- Family Fun and Resource Fair – Broward AWARE!
Protecting Our Children- Saturday, April 18th, 11AM-3PM, Roosevelt Gardens Park, 2841 NW 11th Street, Fort Lauderdale. This program is a collaborative effort between the Children’s Services Council of Broward County, Nancy J. Cotterman Center and more than 23 other community partners.
A day of fun, entertainment and presentations on how to keep children happy, nurtured and safe. The day’s activities include:
- Entertainment from Hot 105
- BSO “Paint-a-Fire Truck”
- Face painting
- Mini-workshops on keeping children safe; dozens of resource tables
- Raffle prizes; free food and refreshments

The Nancy J. Cotterman Center is Broward County's Children's Advocacy Center and Certified Rape Crisis Center.
It is the mission of the NJCC to improve and enhance the quality of life for victims of sexual assault and child abuse through effective forensically sensitive interventions, implemented by professionals specializing in the fields of sexual assault and child abuse. NJCC provides a safe, non-threatening environment for victims and supportive family members. Services are intended to assist in matters of public safety and to help individuals and families in their recovery. NJCC provides the following services at no charge to victims, and their non-offending family members.
- Crisis Unit
- Counseling Unit
- Child Protection Teams
