As a public-policy response to issues of overburdened courts, arrests for minor offenses, racial disparities, and an expensive system for taxpayers to fund, Broward County Commissioners passed an ordinance
that gives law enforcement officers the option of issuing a citation to adults caught with 20 grams or less of marijuana, instead of making an arrest.
Participants can choose to pay a fine, perform community service, or complete an educational program.
It is important to note that only Broward Sherriff’s Office is participating in the County’s Adult Civil Citation program within the municipalities they service. The other independent law enforcement agencies have either elected to implement their own programs within their municipalities, or are not offering Adult Civil Citation at all.
