Before the Event

In the event of an emergency with advance warning, such as a hurricane, be sure you have a sufficient supply of insulin and other required medications.

  • Store insulin properly. In addition to refrigerated storage, insulin vials can be stored at room temperature for up to one month, although you should check the manufacturer's packaging and consult with your pharmacist for information specific to your insulin type.
  • Insulin should not be stored in extreme heat or cold, and never in the freezer, direct sunlight or the glove compartment of a car.
  • In case of a power outage, store insulin in the coolest room of your house. Choose a room that has the best ventilation and receives the least amount of sunlight.
