During Event

Follow these tips for staying safe during a storm:

  • Monitor local media for the latest watches, warning and instructions from local officials.
  • Keep aware of local road closures affected by the storm.
  • Be prepared to immediately evacuate if orders are given by local officials. When a storm surge, flood, or flash flood warning is issued for your area, follow your evacuation plan and head for higher ground, and stay there.
  • Take your pets with you. Remember, pets (other than assistance animals for people with disabilities) are not permitted in most shelters.
  • Don't forget to lock your home.
  • If no vehicle is available, make arrangements with friends or family for transportation.
  • Stay away from floodwaters while driving. If you come upon a flooded road while driving, do not attempt to cross flowing water. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  • If water starts to rise inside your house before you have evacuated, retreat to the second floor, the attic or, if necessary, the roof.
