Purpose

Serve in an advisory capacity to the Board of County Commissioners, the County Administrator and County libraries in respect to all matters pertaining to the Broward County library system and public library services; obtain the benefit of accurate, comprehensive information, advice and counsel concerning all matters relating to public libraries.

Broward County Ordinance #75-16, enacted June 11, 1975.

Amended by Ordinance #93-27, enacted August 10, 1993, providing that an employee of the Libraries Division shall not qualify as a member of the Libraries Advisory Board.

Amended by Ordinance #2001-06, enacted February 13, 2001, increasing the membership from fourteen to eighteen; removing the consecutive term limitation; and allowing for removal of members without cause by the appointing commissioner.

Amended by Ordinance #2009-15, enacted March 24, 2009, deleting the membership requirement that members shall have a demonstrated active interest in public library facilities and services.

Amended by Ordinance #2018-09, encated February 6, 2018 reducing the membership from eighteen to nine; consolidating Library Advisory Board functions.

Membership

Nine (9) members.

Each Broward County Commissioner shall appoint one (1) member.

Each member shall be a resident and elector of Broward County; shall possess a reputation for integrity, responsibility, civic accomplishment, and professional or business ability; and shall not be employed by the Broward County Libraries Division or Broward County government.

Terms

Section 1-233 of Chapter 1, Article XII, Broward County Code of Ordinances, as may be amended from time to time.

Quorum

A simple majority of the total appointed board members.

Library Advisory Board meetings are held from 6PM to 7:30PM in the months of January, March, May, September and November in the boardroom on the 8th floor of the Main Library, 100 South Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale. The meetings are open to the public. For additional information, please call Library Administration at 954-357-7397. 

The meeting dates are as follows (excluding holidays):

• January: 2nd Tuesday 
• March: 3rd Tuesday (changed due to municipal cities elections)
• May: 2nd Tuesday 
• September: 3rd Tuesday (changed due to County Budget Public Hearings)
