Subseries 3.5: Professional activities, awards, interviews, and lectures, 1957-1988 and n.d. (0.40 linear feet)

This subseries contains correspondence that document Shaara's teaching appointments and lecturing engagements at colleges and universities. In addition, these records also include awards Shaara received for his writing, requests for interviews, and invitations to speak at clubs, library associations, and schools.

Although Shaara published many short stories with notable magazines in the 1950s, he still needed to supplement his income. Shaara accepted a position at Florida State University (FSU) as an instructor in the Department of English in 1959. During his tenure, he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor and continued until 1973. Shaara taught literature and creative writing and his workload, over the years, included serving on examining committees for master's degree students, supervising graduate students, and speaking at special events for honors students. He was a great favorite of the students and was awarded the Coyle E. Moore, Jr., Award in 1966 for excellence in teaching. In addition to being a classroom teacher, Shaara filmed a series of lectures on creative writing on FSU's educational television station, WFSU-TV. While at the university, he was also a faculty advisor for the student magazine, The Legend.  In 1968, he defended the publication of a student's short story, "The Pig Knife", and other free speech issues, and opposed FSU President John E. Champion's handling of the student censorship dispute. Shaara taught abroad at the FSU Study Center in Florence during the spring semester of 1972. His motorcycle accident and subsequent trauma marked the end of his academic career at FSU.

After the publication of his novels, The Broken Place (1968) and The Killer Angels (1974), Shaara became a sought-after speaker at colleges, universities, conferences, library associations, and clubs. Some of his notable speaking engagements were at the Chamberlain Symposium in 1978 and Gettysburg College - Civil War Institute in 1987. During this period, Shaara accepted a one-term appointment as writer-in-residence at the University of Southern Mississippi from 1 March to 31 May 1976.

Correspondence on the awards Shaara received includes the Medical Journalism Award (1966) sponsored by the American Medical Association for "In the Midst of Life"; and the Pulitzer Prize (1975) for The Killer Angels. Letters relating to the Pulitzer Prize include that of Carlos Baker, Princeton University. Baker participated on the Pulitzer Prize Fiction Jury that nominated The Killer Angels. Shaara also received a note from Cyril Clemens stating that he was made an honorary member of the Mark Twain Society.

File folders contain letters to and from Shaara. In the finding aid, file folder descriptions with the star symbol symbol indicate that letter(s) from Shaara are included. Materials are arranged alphabetically by corporate or personal name with the names of all corporate correspondents listed in parentheses. Clippings, programs, and other printed materials included with mailings were kept with the correspondence in the file folders.

Related materials may be found in Series I: Writings; Series III: Correspondence - - Agents and publishing activities; Series IV: Professional papers; Series V: Financial and legal papers; Series VI: Personal papers and memorabilia; Series VII: Clippings; Series VIII: Printed matter; and Series XIII: Photographs.

Other materials related to "The Pig Knife" controversy can be found in Series IX: Serials - - Florida State Flambeau, The Legend, and The Kneadle and Series VII: Clippings - - Collected by Shaara- 1968 pertaining to the incident.
