Subseries 3.2: Derivative works, 1961-1987 (0.10 linear feet)

This subseries contains correspondence relating to screenplays, movies, and other artistic creations inspired by Shaara's short stories and novels. From the time of the publication of The Killer Angels, Shaara was approached by numerous individuals and production companies for the motion picture rights to the novel. Ronald F. Maxwell, director/producer, acquired the rights in 1981. Several years after Shaara's death, the motion picture was finally released under the title Gettysburg in the fall of 1993 and aired on TNT. Gary C. Hopper, assistant professor of theatre at Virginia Commonwealth University, corresponded with the author about creating an opera/musical based on The Killer Angels. In addition, Shaara was asked permission to use The Killer Angels as the name of a board war game.

File folders contain letters to and from Shaara. In the finding aid, file folder descriptions with the star symbol symbol indicate that letter(s) from Shaara are included. Materials are arranged alphabetically by corporate or personal name with the names of all corporate correspondents listed in parentheses.

Additional materials related to items in this subseries may be found in Series III: Correspondence - - Agents and publishing activities - - Lou Reda Productions; Correspondence - - Agents and publishing activities - - Sterling Lord Agency; Series III Correspondence - - Financial and legal; and Series XII: Audio-visual materials.  Lou Reda Productions promoted Shaara's works to publishers and lecture bureaus, and the agency represented the author's interests in turning The Killer Angels into a motion picture. The Sterling Lord Agency also briefly represented Shaara on The Killer Angels movie project.  For newspaper articles on The Killer Angels motion picture project see Series VII: Clippings - - Derivative works - - About The Killer Angels motion picture, 1981, 1990.
