Broward County > Library > Support Your Library > Volunteers > Special Opportunities

Broward County residents come from all walks of life and have wonderful experience and knowledge to share with library patrons. Fortunately, giving back to your community by volunteering at your local library has never been easier, simpler or more fun!

There’s sure to be a library location in or near your neighborhood, where you can help in a number of ways, and with a flexible schedule that meets your needs. Many of our adult volunteers assist with shelving books and DVDs. Other opportunities include:

 Each One, Teach One

Making a real difference in someone’s life doesn’t just change them – it also changes you! The Library’s Each One, Teach One program gives you the chance to teach another adult to read and/or write. Participants are required to complete training.

For more information, or to register for training, call 954-357-6230, or e-mail learningservices@broward.org.

 Prime Time

At Broward County Libraries, we value the knowledge and experience of our seniors and encourage you to check out the many exciting volunteer opportunities you can find here. It’s a way for you to give back to your community – doing something fun and rewarding, and on a schedule that fits your lifestyle! A variety of volunteer opportunities exist, or one of these programs may be of interest:

Prime Time

Prime TimePrime Time is an innovative, intergenerational literacy program that brings senior citizens into federally funded daycare centers to read stories and have fun. Training and all materials are provided. To participate, 954-357-7406, or e-mail nmurray@broward.org.

 OASIS Connections

It’s hard to get by in today’s world without strong computer skills. You can help people overcome their fear of technology, acquire the skills they need to stay up-to-date in the workplace, keep in touch with family and friends, and be engaged in the community.

OASIS Connections is a curriculum of computer courses for mature adults designed to build confidence and success. Classes are held at select Broward County library locations, usually during weekday mornings or afternoons, and cover such topics as "Meet the Computer," the Internet, Facebook and the iPad.

You don’t have to be a computer “guru” to participate in the OASIS Connections program, but a good working knowledge of how to use a computer is important. We will train you to teach and provide the course manuals and support you need. The only other requirements are enthusiasm and patience! Your payment will be the smiles and words of appreciation you’ll receive from the fellow residents you help. For more information or to apply, call 954-201-2657.
